June - July 2021 Alongside the annual seminar in September, Doc's Kingdom is starting a new year-round program of daylong events. Each gathering is dedicated to discussing a body of work presented by filmmakers, artists, researchers and curators in dialogue with an eclectic group of participants. Each assembly proposes an open space of collective discussion driven by works, projects and ideas of documentary art and cinema, including screenings in the auditorium, walks in the garden and conversations in the open air amphitheater. In 2021, Doc’s Kingdom is in residency at Casa da Cerca, in Almada, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its botanical garden, “O Chão das Artes”, with an inaugural program exploring the ecological dimension of filmmaking. Taking into account that a simple camera movement may reveal complex relations within a territory and a landscape, we will travel through topographies of resistance and spaces of emancipation imagined by contemporary filmmakers and artists. On the other hand, we will analyse historical contributions of film to the development of colonial models of relationship with places and their inhabitants. We will look close at fragments, pigments, elements and vital matters. Blending camera and body movement, we will listen to voices guiding us on a transcontinental journey without leaving the garden. In order to examine a diversity of documentary practices in filmmaking, the inaugural series at Casa da Cerca will also be a space of encounters with other artistic practices, such as drawing, photography and painting, as well as with scientific practices such as geography, anthropology and agronomy. The point of departure for each gathering is the encounter between two guests, who are also hosts and guides for the daylong journey. From June 6 through July 25, on Sundays, Doc’s Kingdom at Casa da Cerca will welcome a journey with: Maria do Carmo Piçarra and Marta Mateus (6/6), Etienne de France and Teresa Castro (6/20), Duarte Belo and Luísa Homem (7/4), Ana Balona de Oliveira and Isabel Carlos (7/11), Ana Vaz and Nuno da Luz (7/18), Catarina Marto and Marcelo Felix (7/25). Registration is open for all six Doc’s Kingdom events at Casa da Cerca in June and July 2021. Entrance is free and space is limited. The maximum number of participants and conditions of participation may change in accordance with the evolution of COVID19 and regulations issued by the Portuguese state health services.
